FLYTIP: Post Format

WELCOME TO FLYTIP, an original feature hosted here at FLYLēF to share blog design graphics and advices, as well as encourage related discussions. The topic for Saturday, September 2nd 2017, is a guest prompt from the lovely Erica @ Erica Robyn Reads, and is "FLYTIP: Post Format || What are your do's and/or don'ts for formatting a blog post?"

Blogging is a fun way to me to keep up my design skills, but it's also a place where I will choose fun over function or form. So, I will forgo some good design principles intentional (don't tell my professors :D ), but here are a few recommendations that I think will not give them a heart attack.

• • MY DO's • •

DO: Keep paragraph columns narrow.
REASON: This is more comfortable to read, tracking the eyes left to right.

DO: Add "Review" after the title.
REASON: While I do understand that it's nice to categorize the type of post we publish, I personally prefer to place the book title first. It's good for SEO. You'll find that I tend to title my post: TITLE || Book Review. Similarly, have you noticed how books or television shows will have their titles followed by "a novel" or "a documentary," respectively? Hmmm...

DO: Provide quality content.
REASON: As pretty as a blog post can be, nothing can beat quality content.

DO: Be subtle with ads.
REASON: Is there anything more annoying than to visit a site and have loads of ads, subscription requests, and who knows what else pop up and ruin your reading experience? Probably not. Ads are fine, but please keep it strategically integrated so that it becomes a part of your site, and not taking over your site.

DO: Adopt a style and be consistent.
REASON: My last tip I'd like to share is be consistent (more or less) in your format style. Recognition is gold in branding. I always encourage changing our blog to keep it fresh, but I prefer to make micro changes. That being said, if you're doing a major site overhaul, then that's a different beast entirely.

I'd love to see your post! Add your link so that I, and others, can visit. Links that do not directly go to your FLYTIP post will be removed. Submissions end after 30 days.
