Time Weaver: Heart of Cogs by Jacinta Maree Tour Banner

I have a clock for a heart…

And the man who put it there tried to take it out.

Time Collectors are modern day genies capable of exchanging wishes for time. Elizabeth Wicker lives within a steampunk world riddled with the supernatural. Among the stories of witches, Bacts and other monsters, Time Collectors remain as the greatest hushed secret among the noble families.

They are temptation's greatest tools. A contract with a Time Collector is a guaranteed death sentence, and for some the prize isn't worth the price.

But when Elizabeth is struck down by a fatal heart attack, she finds herself trapped beneath a Time Collector's blade. With no time left to offer, she makes a desperate sacrifice at a second chance of life.

If there's only one truth, it is a Time Collector will always come back to collect.

book review rating 3 out of 5

IN HER FIRST installment of the Time Collector series, Time Weaver: Heart of Cogs, Jacinta Maree introduces a fascinating, steampunk world with modern day genies who grant wishes in exchange for time. Yet, even while I was devouring each page of this addictively fast-paced and action-packed novel, I couldn’t help feeling some frustration by the lack of character development and world-building.

Elizabeth Wicker was born with a congenital heart defect. She has always believed that she would live a short and natural life. But, when her mom is murdered, she is swept into her estranged father’s supernatural world, and his deadly mission to hunt corrupted Time Collectors. However, when Elizabeth is struck by a fatal heart attack, she finds herself staring into the eyes of Klaus, a Time Collector, to plead for a contract—to bargain for her life.

Elizabeth is young, impulsive, and proud (in an ironically kind of insecure way). She is often mired in crisis of her own creation. But, I I really enjoyed Elizabeth’s glowing, fighting spirit. Klaus, on the other hand, is an enigma that I wish had a more developed backstory. I liked the small amount of tension between Elizabeth and Klaus, which adds a nice touch of romance to balance the action.

I enjoyed the first half of the novel much more than the second half. The first half was executed well with good pacing and interesting twists, leading up to a thrilling mid-story climax. Unfortunately, after the halfway mark, the story seemed to fall apart for me. With a vast introduction of new characters and supernatural beings, the story felt scattered, jumping from character to character, scene to scene. I was left feeling confused and whiplashed by the quick turn of events.

Despite some concerns, Jacinta Maree’s Time Weaver: Heart of Cogs is a series debut with a refreshingly unique take on the allure of wishes. I enjoyed the philosophical exploration of using life as a currency to spend in exchange for desire, which naturally opens up the topic of greed and consequences. It’s a darkly addictive novel, with a good blend of fantasy, and enough intrigue to make me curious for more.
