Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice...
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.
MUCH TO MY surprise, Amanda Bouchet’s A Promise of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles 1) was a delightful indulgence I could not put down. With a feisty heroine, Greek-infused setting, heart-pounding action, and tantalizing sexual chemistry, the pages in this series debut don’t just turn—they fly!
Catalia "Cat" Fisa is the Kingmaker, magically gifted and born once every 200 years. Yet, she has no interest in her power and would like nothing more than to go unnoticed. Narrated from Cat’s POV, her voice is unique and endearing, yet sparkle and sassy. Her runaway mouth is a fountain of unfiltered, sly humor. Her obvious love for sarcasm makes Cat a genuinely fun and fresh heroine. I found myself giggling endlessly.
Griffin is a warlord intent on bringing peace to his magic-deprived realm. When he discovers that Cat is the Kingmaker, he will stop at nothing to have her, including abduction. As Griffin’s captive, Cat torments him at every turn and a delicious romance begins to spark. It's quite tender that a man like Griffin—arrogant, yet reasonable—has the patience of a god, and the understanding of a lover. Their sexual chemistry sizzles.
While the romance was perhaps the most unexpected treat, I also enjoyed the adrenaline-fueled battles, political treachery, and a host of magical creatures. But most of all, it was a joyous ride that bound me to Cat as she discovered there’s more to living than just simply surviving.
A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is a highly promising debut. There’s still so much I'd like to know about these characters and their world. I purchased this book on a whim, but I'm more than ready to dive into the second installment. Please excuse me while I go in search of Breath of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles 2).
