Seasons Within by Lele Iturrioz || Blog Tour Review with Giveaway

Most teenage girls know their name, where they came from, who they are. Not G, a beautiful redhead with unusual markings on her wrist. She gets her name from a silver locket she keeps around her neck, unaware the engraved letter “G” on its front holds the secret to her past.

G’s life before the age of six has been a mystery to her. Each night for the last twelve years she’s been haunted by the same nightmare—a war. Horrendous beasts, warriors able to wield the four elements, and a boy who saves her by means of blue fire taunt her memory. But on her eighteenth birthday, G’s life begins to unravel. When she meets her new Chemistry professor, a man with an uncanny resemblance to the boy who saves her, she knows there must be more to her dreams.

It’s dangerous not knowing who you are, what you’re capable of, and what future awaits you. Especially when the darkness that slaughtered your entire world, just found you.

AS A DESIGNER, I'm irresistibly drawn to the cover of Seasons Within. It's vibrant and whimsical. I felt completely enchanted by it, and even more so after reading the opening scene. With a plot that coils like the tangles of the First Tree's root, I was wrapped in Lele Iturrioz's earnest fantasy world crawling with horrendous beasts, yet balanced with the magical beauty of nature and the unwavering bonds of friendship.

G is an orphan with no recollection of her past. For as long as she can remember, she's always adorn a locket with an engraved letter "G." No matter how hard she tries, she cannot remove it. With a past she can't recall and terrifying nightmares to fill her dreams, G's only solace is with her best friend, Priyam, a tech nerd with a razor-sharp mouth. Life changes in the most dramatic way nearing her 17th birthday when she meets, Edan, her handsome Chemistry teacher with a British accent, and his entourage of otherworldly warriors: Veter, prankster and wind-wielder; Shui, motherly and water-wielder; Willow, standoffish and earth-wielder; Donovan, flirtatious and animal whisperer; Hunter, introvert and tracker.

These characters, along with a few mysterious others, is one of my favorite aspects of Seasons Within. Ms. Iturrioz brings together a diverse cast, both in personality and in ethnicity. She creates a warm and synergistic vibe. The characters were fun, felt like good friends, and even pulled pranks that made me chuckle countlessly throughout the story. Even though some of the humor felt a bit childish and incongruent with a fierce warrior's persona, I still found the unexpected moments of comedy welcomed.

On the flip side, I sense that the author rushed to complete this ARC. Typos and grammatical errors notwithstanding, I felt that Seasons Within started off quite well by setting up an interesting coming-of-age story of a mysterious girl with a destiny to fulfill. Unfortunately, the story pivots toward a tug-a-war of emotions between G and Edan that steers away from the heart of the book, especially when another is introduced—forming the beginnings of an uncompelling love triangle.

Nevertheless, Ms. Iturrioz begins this series admirable. Seasons Within is solidly grounded in a dangerous and imaginative world, full of soulless abominations who live to torture, and a diverse cast of personalities to fawn over, as new perils emerge in an adventure likely to leave readers entertained and addictive for more.
