RARE DOES A book hold me captive from the start, and keeps me obsessively turning the pages all the way until the very end. The Dream Protocol (Descent 1), by Adara Flynn Quick, though reads more like a novella with only 154 pages, is a potent Irish cocktail that blends the mind-bending, virtual reality splendor of The Matrix with the eerie, dystopian quality of The Giver. Ms. Flynn succinctly delivers an action-packed and suspenseful futuristic mystery, that’s anything but lightweight.

In Skellig City, it’s the year 3077, the rhythmic beat of a single drum enraptures a 15-year-old Deirdre Callaghan (and quite frankly, me, as well) as she witnesses the frightening Ritual of Decent for Maeve O’Brian—35 and considered a “ruined.” For centuries, no one has tried to escape the rite, for it is a gift to the Land of the Blest.  And, the Minister’s army ensures it. In Maeve’s last moment, she passes on a single message to Deirdre that sows a seed of doubt about the Ministry.

Each new clue that Deirdre uncovers about the Ministry is an eloquent brush stroke aimed at capturing a portrait of a keenly perceptive young girl in search for answers about herself and the merciless community she lives in. When her best friend, Flynn Brennan, who looks more like an adult than a prepubescent boy, is taken in for his unusually aging disorder that could infect the young and vital in Skellig City, Deirdre, along with an adorable fireball, named Antrim, will set into motion a gripping, nonstop chain of events that had me enthralled until the very end.

With excellent pacing, intriguing world-building, and larger than life characters, The Dream Protocol will unravel violent truths that will take the story to a crescendo, as it opens up entirely new questions with its revelation. It’s very worthy of a sleepless night (1:47 AM)!
