Fast-paced adventure full of action and magic, Rise (Order of the Krigers 1), by Jennifer Anne Davis, is a pleasant coming of age story about 16-year old Kaia, a young female warrior. Her journey from innocence to understanding highlights qualities of courage and selflessness, likely finding favor with many young adult fans.

In the kingdom of Nelebek, an ancient curse has cause the people to live in fear of their evil ruler—Morlet. To lift the curse, Nelebek’s only hope lies with twelve warriors in the Order of the Krigers. When their powers are linked, only then can they defeat Morlet. Eleven Krigers have been hunted and imprison with one, last remaining hope—Kaia—a steadfast, heroine who wields (quite awesomely, I might add) a powerful magical bo staff. The action scenes where Kaia handles the bo was written with great attention to the fighting choreography.

Despite being hunt by Morlet, I never really feared for Kaia's safety. As a reader, I just couldn't emotional connect to the level were I felt what I read. It was really quite strange when the heart and mind are incongruent. I think this is because atmospherically the book was overall lighthearted, with a good integration of humor, positivity, and above all, hope. I didn’t feel despair where I thought I should.

I enjoy Kaia’s character, though at times I find her perspective a little too idealistic. She is very innocent, even gullible, and sees the good in everyone, even Morlet. “It’s your desire to see the good in people that makes you special.” I understand that she was written with this particular disposition perhaps as a way to steer a lot of her decisions; however, her choices were often not very cautious and thus seemed impractical and unrealistic. But at the same time, I like Kaia for her goodwill and kind heart.

The romance was a bit…crowded…with three different pursuers vying for Kaia’s heart. I’m particular fond of Anders—selfless, mysterious, wonderfully insufferable, and assassin extraordinaire. I enjoyed Kaia and Ander’s denied romance. Kaia’s heart is not free to love whomever. She will have to choose between following her desire or fulfilling her duty—choices that will lead to very different outcomes.

Overall, Rise is ideal for a light summer read full of action, with plenty of room to expand on the character and plot development—quite nicely setting up for a sequel.

{ I received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you, especially to the author and publisher, for kindly giving me an opportunity to review this title. }
